News and Events in our Schools

The scheme established in 2008 through a very generous donation by Mr. JP McManus to a trust fund, sees one hundred and twenty five third level scholarships awarded each year throughout the thirty two counties of Ireland. A minimum of two scholarships are awarded in each county. This year is the 10th anniversary of the JP McManus All Ireland Scholarship scheme and JP McManus has commited to funding the programme for a further ten years.

The scholarship is worth €6,750 per annum for each year of the awardee’s undergraduate programme and considers those students who attend non fee paying schools and who are exempt from paying the Leaving Certificate examination fee. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of results of a candidate’s first attempt at the Leaving Certificate. Each year twenty five scholarships are awarded to students from Northern Ireland.

This year’s ceremony was held in the Concert Hall of University of Limerick on November 25th 2017. There were one hundred and nine recipients on the day including a total of twenty-three scholarship winners from the Community and Comprehensive sector representing twenty of our schools where three schools had two awardees each.

President Micheal D Higgins was the Guest Speaker this year, and described his own journey through education during his address. Two previous scholarship winners also spoke about the enormously positive impact winning the scholarship had on their lives. Ms. Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD, Minister of State for Higher Education presented the scholarships jointly with JP Mc Manus.
